Contract: There are no contracts as such, but it is expected that you stay here for at least three years. A lot of resources are used and effort put in for you to work here and you are expected to commit to your town for a period of three years. A side note: Some towns have not a had a Canadian educated family physician for more then 20 years.
Money: Yes, the money is good but I believe life here is best suited to those with a healthy adventurous lifestyle. There are two ways you can be paid either (a) a contract, which is around $300,000.00 per year the variables include your location,or (b) pay per visit which averages out around $350-300,000 per year. You are required in Canada to put aside your tax to be paid at the end of the financial year (April); this of course will be depending how much you earn. After meeting with an accountant here we put aside about 40% for tax and were told we will have money left over. This seems to be what most physicians put aside.
If you are a specialist, contact us and we can advise you on approximate earnings based on your particular specialty.
Another thing to remember is that you will be a partner in a practice so you will be responsible for part of the cost involved in business expenses. Here is an example but please note, as this is the Internet I will not put up any of my own financials. This is a true example of a undisclosed clinic near us: The clinic spends $9,000.00 per fortnight on costs such as wages, rent, etc. Each practitioner earns about $12 - 15,000.00 per fortnight gross. Each takes out $2,400.00 for their share of the expenses. Each save 40% for taxes leaving them $5,760.00 - $7,560.00 net per fortnight. Obviously cost will vary depending on how many family physicians are in partnership and rent and wages etc. Your sponsoring physician will be able to give you a better idea.
Accommodation: We recommend that you complete the CAPE before buying/selling anything big or permanent. In the town we are in, we pay $115.00 per week in rent for a fully furnished house. Here, house prices vary from $50,000.00 (warm and liveable) to $200,000.00 (a very big, luxurious modern home). Our home was bought for us to rent at $50,000.00. Once you know which town you will be working in and have started to correspond with your HR representative and your sponsoring physician, they will be able to tell you more precise figures. If you do on-call, you will be required to live no more then a certain distance from the town’s hospital so you can respond to emergencies in a timely manner. Here it is 15 minutes from call to walking into the hospital.
Car: Again we recommend that you complete the CAPE before buying anything big or permanent. Your new medical clinic and sponsoring physician will arrange a hire car for you. Here, it costs us $1322.00 per month but you only need to pay this until you are ready to purchase your own.
Recreational: Recreation in Saskatchewan summer and winter.
Summer includes- Fishing, fly fishing, bike riding (few hills), boating, water skiing, quading (ATV), canoeing, shooting, archery, golf, horse riding, camping, etc.
Winter includes- skiing, snowboarding, snow shoeing, ice fishing, snowmowbiling, ice hockey, ice skating, curling etc.
Recreation in Saskatchewan is quite cheap compared to Australia. Do a quick Google search and I think you will agree that prices are far better here.
